One of the easiest ways to make healthy eating work in real life is to make a few decisions before you’re hungry. That’s why I love breakfasts you can prepare the night before. When morning gets busy, you don’t have to figure out what to eat—you already have something nourishing waiting in the refrigerator.
These overnight oats combine whole-grain oats, chia seeds, Greek yogurt, banana, and berries for a breakfast that provides a combination of protein, fiber, and healthy fats. The oats, chia seeds, fruit, and berries provide plenty of fiber, while Greek yogurt adds the protein that a traditional bowl of oatmeal often lacks.
That protein becomes especially important after 50. At LifesYearning, one of the things I encourage women to do is spread protein throughout the day rather than trying to make up for it at dinner. Breakfast is often where the biggest opportunity exists. Adding Greek yogurt to overnight oats is a simple change that makes the meal more balanced without making breakfast more complicated.
I also love that this recipe uses fruit for natural sweetness. Ripe banana, berries, cinnamon, and creamy yogurt give you plenty of flavor without needing to turn breakfast into dessert. If you enjoy a little crunch, add a small sprinkle of chopped walnuts or almonds on top.
And perhaps the best part is the convenience. Spend a few minutes preparing breakfast at night, and you’ve eliminated one decision from tomorrow morning. Healthy habits become much easier to maintain when the better choice is also the easy choice.
That’s a principle we come back to again and again at LifesYearning. Sustainable weight loss isn’t about creating perfect meals every day. It’s about building simple routines around real foods you enjoy—and repeating them often enough that healthy eating begins to feel like your normal way of life.
Ingredients:
- 1 cup rolled oats
- 1 cups unsweetened almond milk
- 1 cup plain Greek yogurt
- 2 tablespoons chia seeds
- 1 ripe bananas, sliced
- 1 cup mixed berries
- ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon
- Optional toppings: chopped nuts, honey, additional banana slices
Directions:
- Prepare the Base: In a mixing bowl, combine the rolled oats, almond milk, greek yogurt, chia seeds, and ground cinnamon. Stir well to ensure that all the ingredients are evenly mixed.
- Sweeten to Taste: If desired, you can add a bit of sweetness to the mixture. You can either stir in a drizzle of honey or another sweetener of your choice. Adjust the sweetness to your preference.
- Layer with Bananas and Berries: Take half of the sliced bananas and berries and layer them at the bottom of your serving containers. This could be Mason jars, bowls, or any other containers you prefer.
- Add the Oat Mixture: Pour the prepared oat and almond milk mixture over the sliced bananas in the containers. Make sure the mixture is distributed evenly among the containers.
- Top with Remaining Bananas: Use the remaining sliced bananas to create another layer on top of the oat mixture in each container.
- Seal and Refrigerate: Seal each container with a lid or plastic wrap and place them in the refrigerator. Let the overnight oats sit and soak for at least 4 hours or preferably overnight. This allows the oats and chia seeds to absorb the liquid and become soft.
- Serve and Enjoy: When ready to eat, remove the containers from the refrigerator and give the oats a good stir to mix the layers together. You can enjoy the overnight oats as they are, or you can add some extra toppings for added flavor and texture. Chopped nuts, a drizzle of honey, or additional banana slices work well as toppings.
