◷ 15 min prep ♨ 40–45 min bake ♧ 8 servings

This Cranberry Apple Crisp combines tender baked apples, tart cranberries, and a golden oat-pecan topping for a comforting dessert that’s perfect for fall and the holiday season. The fruit becomes soft and juicy as it bakes, while the topping adds a delicious buttery crunch.

Made with whole fruit, old-fashioned oats, pecans, and pure maple syrup, this crisp offers a more nourishing alternative to many traditional fruit desserts. There’s no refined flour in the topping, and the natural sweetness of the apples balances the cranberries without requiring large amounts of added sugar.

It’s simple enough for an everyday treat and festive enough for Thanksgiving or Christmas dinner.

Ingredients

Yield: 8 servings · Suggested baking dish: 9-by-13-inch

Fruit Filling

  • 5 medium apples, cored and sliced
  • 2 cups fresh or frozen cranberries
  • ¼ cup pure maple syrup
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

Oat-Pecan Topping

  • 1 cup old-fashioned rolled oats
  • ⅓ cup chopped pecans
  • 3 tablespoons butter, melted
  • 1 tablespoon plus 1 teaspoon pure maple syrup
  • ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven. Preheat the oven to 350°F. Lightly grease a 9-by-13-inch baking dish.
  2. Prepare the fruit. Core and slice the apples into evenly sized pieces. Place them in the baking dish with the fresh or frozen cranberries.
  3. Season the filling. Add ¼ cup maple syrup and 1 teaspoon cinnamon to the fruit. Toss gently until the apples and cranberries are evenly coated.
  4. Prepare the crisp topping. In a separate bowl, combine the old-fashioned oats, chopped pecans, melted butter, remaining maple syrup, and remaining ½ teaspoon cinnamon. Stir until the oats are evenly coated.
  5. Assemble the crisp. Sprinkle the oat-pecan mixture evenly over the apples and cranberries.
  6. Bake until golden. Bake uncovered for 40–45 minutes, until the fruit is bubbling, the apples are tender, and the topping is golden brown. If the topping browns too quickly, loosely cover with foil.
  7. Cool and serve. Allow the crisp to rest for 10–15 minutes before serving. Enjoy warm on its own or with a spoonful of plain Greek yogurt.

Why This Recipe Is a Healthy Choice

Apples are a good source of dietary fiber, including pectin, a soluble fiber that supports digestive health. Cranberries contribute additional fiber and naturally occurring plant compounds called polyphenols, including anthocyanins that give them their vibrant red color. Together, these fruits provide flavor, color, and nutrients while making fruit the foundation of this dessert.

Old-fashioned oats add whole grains and beta-glucan, a type of soluble fiber associated with healthy cholesterol levels. Pecans contribute unsaturated fats along with small amounts of protein, fiber, and minerals. The combination creates a satisfying topping without relying on refined flour or a large quantity of butter.

For women over 50 working toward sustainable weight loss, enjoying a homemade dessert can be part of a balanced lifestyle. This crisp uses the natural sweetness of apples, the tartness of cranberries, and warm cinnamon to create plenty of flavor with a moderate amount of maple syrup. It’s a delicious reminder that healthy eating doesn’t require eliminating favorite seasonal treats.

Mary’s Opinion – Taste Test

This Cranberry Apple Crisp is another delicious recipe that’s definitely worth making! It was incredibly easy to prepare, and I love how the combination of apples and cranberries brings such a festive holiday feeling to the dish. It’s colorful, comforting, and absolutely delicious!

Now, this recipe does have approximately 9 grams of added sugar per serving, but I think that’s pretty reasonable for an occasional dessert, especially one that’s perfect for Thanksgiving or Christmas. I don’t believe healthy eating means we can never enjoy something sweet. It’s about making thoughtful choices and finding ways to enjoy our favorite foods without going overboard.

What I especially like is that we’re getting the natural goodness of apples and cranberries, along with fiber from the fruit and oat topping. It’s a wonderful way to enjoy a homemade holiday dessert that feels indulgent while still including some nutritious ingredients.

And did I mention how easy it was to make? Simple ingredients, very little preparation, and a delicious result. This is definitely a dessert I’d be happy to serve during the holidays. So festive, so easy, and super tasty!

Cooking Notes

Choose the right apples: Firm varieties such as Honeycrisp, Pink Lady, Granny Smith, or Braeburn hold their shape well during baking. Combining a sweet apple with a tart variety can create an especially nice flavor balance.

Fresh or frozen cranberries: Both work well. Frozen cranberries can be added directly to the baking dish without thawing, although the crisp may need a few extra minutes in the oven.

For a crunchy topping: Spread the oat-pecan mixture evenly over the fruit without pressing it down. The topping should become golden and lightly crisp as it bakes.

Adjusting sweetness: Cranberries are naturally quite tart. Taste the finished recipe before deciding whether you’d prefer slightly more or less maple syrup the next time you make it.

Storage: Refrigerate leftovers in a covered container for 3–4 days. Reheat individual servings in the microwave or warm in a 350°F oven to help restore the topping’s texture.

Serving suggestion: A spoonful of plain Greek yogurt adds creaminess and a little extra protein without requiring a sugary topping.
